HD-DVD: The End is Near
I got this from Netflix in my inbox yesterday:
“Toward the end of February, HD DVDs in your Saved Queue will automatically be changed to standard definition DVDs. Then toward the end of this year, all HD DVDs in your Queue will be changed to standard definition DVDs.”
No more HD-DVD from Netflix. It comes as no surprise though, I’ve had HD-DVD movies sitting at the top of my queue for months and never gotten them. I think that this is just another chink in HD-DVD’s last stand. It won’t be too long now before HD-DVD is off the shelf.
Now, If I could just get my hands on a sub $200 blu-ray player ![]()

Time to buy a PS3. I got that same email. I’ve been tempted many times to buy an HD-DVD player since they were so cheap. I guess I’m glad I didn’t now. I’m sad I suggested that my Dad buy one during Dec when it looked like it was going to stay a dual format world.

So are you getting rid of your HDDVD player? Or are you gonna wait for all the HDDVDs to go on sale and get a ton of them for really cheap?

I doubt that I’ll go and buy a bunch. Maybe I can sell it somewhere, but I think its worth is dropping by the day. I’ll probably end up just chucking it.
Doh!

Pardon my ‘igerance’ … So if you have an HD-DVD and they drop that format, can you not play regular DVDs on it?

Yes regular DVDs will still work, and it will up-convert them to 720p/1080i/1080p. But, up-converting isn’t the same as playing native resolutions. Plus Blu-ray has better sound quality and is more likely to have 6.1 or 7.1 channel audio.
