OS X 10.5 Leopard – Mini review

Monday, November 5th, 2007

So I’ve been running Leopard now for over a week on a few different machines, in the office and out of it. Here are a few points that I’ve noticed about it:

The Good:

  • Upgrade was a piece of cake, but took awhile at about an hour and a half
  • I love the new spaces feature
  • The new iChat is awesome, all its great video features work over Google Talk!
  • Stacks are very nice and have cleaned up my desktop
  • You can use iPhoto libraries on your desktop (even RSS feeds!) and automatically rotate them
  • The new iPhoto screen saver has a photo mosaic mode, very cool
  • Screen sharing (built in VNC) is great, and piece of cake to use
  • Time machine seems to work well over a network share, even on laptops that aren’t always on the network
  • Time machine’s interface is just plain cool and easy to use
  • The new transparent menus are very nice, same with the dock and menu bar

The Bad:

  • Cyberduck won’t upload files edited in an external editor
  • Shrook crashed at startup, but is now fixed
  • VMware and Parallels seem to be slightly more unstable on Leopard
  • iChat is still missing features that Adium has: like a quick way to view chat history

Mac OS X 10.5 Comes out on Friday!

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

I’ve been looking forward to the next release of Mac OS X for awhile now. It’s got some things that I’m really looking forward to:

Automated airborne refueling

Automated air refueling

Check this out! DARPA is working on a software and hardware package that will let jets dock and refuel with tankers automatically! This will result in UCAV’s being able to automatically refuel in air, as well as manned jets that can take the burden off the pilot. Pretty cool!

So sick of hearing about the iPhone

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

I’m sick of hearing about the iPhone from TUAW, so I made another Yahoo Pipe to get rid of any iPhone mentions! Yay!

Google Earth 4.2 now shows the stars

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

I’ve been seeing a lot of different news articles talking about the new space feature in Google Earth. I downloaded it and tried it out, but I’m not impressed at all. I’d much rather use Stellarium, it’s a much better space explorer and browser than Google Earth. I’ll hold out for a few versions to see if Google Earth can make their space viewing any better.

OC Register reports on the Angels

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

I find it annoying that the only RSS feed I can get from the OC Register about Angels baseball is their feed about the whole of Orange County sports. I don’t care about basketball, football (do we even have a football team?), or soccer. I just want my Angels news!

So I took their RSS feed and using Yahoo Pipes filtered out the crap I don’t want! Pretty sweet! It only took like 3 minutes and I had the feed I wanted.

Here it is for you to enjoy as well: OC Register – Angels

Netflix has been down for half a day

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Netflix has been having some major problems with their website. Since last night I haven’t been able to get on to netflix.com. They keep saying that they will be back up at a specific time, but so far they keep pushing that time back.

Netflix down

Found a bit more info at HackingNetflix.com.

UPDATE:
Looks like the 365 Main data center in San Francisco was down due to power outages from PG&E. Many other Web 2.0 properties went offline as well, including Craig’s List and Sixapart (LiveJournal). Here are more links:

I can read friend-only LiveJournal’s now!

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Finally! I got my news reader, Shrook, to let me read everyone’s friend-locked posts. Here is the format for anyone wondering:

http://<ljusername>:<password>@<friendlj>.livejournal.com/data/rss?auth=digest

Just replace the <italics> words with first your user name at LiveJournal, then your password, and lastly the user name of your friend’s blog.
